Tip of the Week - The 15 minute rule: How to be more productive
A close friend of mine once said something profound that stuck with me:
It takes 15 minutes of non-interrupted concentration for your brain to run at full productivity.
At first I thought they were crazy, then I thought maybe they have truth behind what they are telling me. Being a person to find out all the facts I searched around the internet and found this informative blog Getting More Done James.
While she does not cover the science of it all, she spells it out nicely, for those of us who want more concrete facts we can read the book Where There's a Will, There's an A by Claude Onley. The premise of the book is you can get things done in 15 minute spurts. Focus your activity on the task at hand and do not let the brain become over stimulated by pesky interruptions.
When the brain becomes overloaded it has the habit of closing down and comprehending nothing. The trick to it all is to do activities in 15 minute burst completely shut off from ‘Time Bandits’ (I love that phrase).
That is easier said than done and cannot be achieved all of the time. To quote Neen James
“Of course she didn’t believe me but she agreed in the January 2007 that she would write for 15 minutes every day (at least) and she did. Regardless of what was occurring within her life she carved out 15 minutes to add something to her book. I am so proud to announce that she completed that book and on 18th December 2007 she held her very first book in her hands. Ah the power of the 15 minute rule!”
So your day does not need to be slotted into 15 minute increments like some high priced attorney trying to squeeze every penny out of there clients. You just need to take a specific task you are struggling with and carve out your 15 minutes!
It is that easy, till next time, stay safe.
